I am a pediatrician who participated as Principal Investigator of one of Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trial Group (PACTG) research sites from 1999-2002. As part of this effort, I developed skills in therapy administration for pediatric AIDS clinical trials. I was the Co-Principal Investigator of a pilot project from Retrovirus Research Center known as ASUMA project. This in was an HIV prevention program for early adolescents and their parents. Also, I was Principal Investigator of an individual pilot project funded by the Puerto Rico Comprehensive Center for Study of HIV Disparities (PR-CCHD) that studies communication about sexuality between HIV positive mothers and their adolescent’s daughters. This effort leads the development of a dyad communication about sexuality scale culturally sensitive for the Puerto Rican population. Currently, I am the Co-Principal Investigator of the Data Management and Statistical Research Support Unit (DMSRSU). I am the Principal Investigator of a community-based participatory research intervention for the prevention of HIV for Puerto Rican women funded by the Puerto Rico Clinical and Translational Research Consortium (PRCTRC). I am also an Associate Professor at Universidad Central del Caribe, School of Medicine (UCC). As part of my academic duties, I impart some lectures in the Clinical Research course for medical students. I have been a member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) since 2002; this experience had increased my knowledge in investigational techniques and the regulatory requirements for Research in Human Subjects. I am also a research advocate for the key function of the Regulatory and Knowledge Unit of the PRCTRC. Actually, I am a chairperson for the IRB of Comprehensive Cancer Center of the UPR.
